Hi, Just wondering if anyone had any tips on travelling with a bike overseas in regard to bike bags/boxes etc for airline travel. Looks like my work will probably send me to Holland for 3 weeks and I should be able to do the Antwerp half ironman in Belgium. I'm just trying to see if it is worth taking my bike or hiring or buying an el cheapo one over there. I could either buy a bike bag or rent one I think. Any info would be much appreciated.
Cheers, Damo

Damo

You can get a bike bag to get you over there and back for $200-300 dollars which may be cheaper than renting one. There is nothng like your own bike! You may need to buy a few kg from the airline though depending on your baggage allowance. Hopefully bike bag + bike are <20kg.

Sounds like a terrific opportunity......so do not forget to do a post when you get back.

hey, we are coming back next week from the Netherlands and of course Arno has bought a new bike here. We also, for the first time, invested in a hard case for it.

But having said that we have flown numerous times with our bikes and always just used a cardboard box. With a few tricks you can keep it pretty safe. And we have never had any issues with that.

Then there's also just a plastic cover which does not offer protection but is beneficial as they are less likely to throw it or place heavy luggage on top of it if they can see it is a bike.

I think you would have trouble hiring a racer there. Although maybe you could try a local bike shop.

All the best! It's great weather over here at the moment, currently on the Mosel in Germany. Next week back to work Sad

Hi,

Thanks for the info Martin and Sarah. I bought a bike bag from Chain Reactons from the UK and it arrived the other day. It seems like it was good value for less than $160 including delivery. I've entered in the Antwerp Belgium half ironman so hopefully the bike will arrive in one piece Smile.

Good luck with your training.

Cheers,
Damo
